Low flow water fixtures that address the health care setting’s infection control concerns and high volume usage criteria are becoming increasingly available at competitive prices. First, Mara Baum of Anshen and Allen will review how to tailor product selection to a health care facility’s needs, and will offer the latest resources on ranking systems and other criteria to help the decision making process. Next, Kevin Shulte and Craig Flandermeyer of Schmidt Associates will present a case study of water efficiency in hospital emergency rooms. Finally, you will learn how low-flow plumbing fixtures have saved money at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA from Geoff Glass of Providence and Troy Aichle of Stirrett-Johnsen, Inc.

Mara Baum, AIA, LEED AP, is a designer and researcher at Anshen+Allen Architects in San Francisco, where she focuses on the intersection between ecological issues and the creation of a healthy and healing built environment. Her current work includes projects at Pomerado Hospital, now under construction, new bed buildings for Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, and grant-funded research on the challenges and synergies of integrating eco-effective and evidence-based design best practices. Ms. Baum also teaches green building courses at California College of the Arts and online for the Boston Architectural College Sustainable Design Certificate Program. She is active in the US Green Building Council both locally and nationally, having recently completed a two year position with the national USGBC Research Committee as its 2006 Ginsberg Sustainability Fellow and a committee Liaison. Ms. Baum holds a Master of Architecture and Master of City Planning from University of California Berkeley and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture Magna Cum Laude from Washington University.

He received his master’s degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He has served four major medical centers in Western Washington over his career as a health care facility manager spanning 20 years - the last 9 of which has been as Director of Facility & Technology Services for Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington. Geoff holds a certification as a Healthcare Facilities Manager and has been recognized for his continuing efforts to make his hospital a more green operation.

Troy holds degrees in HVAC and Refrigeration Design, and Construction Management from the University of Washington. For each of his last 16 years, Troy has estimated and managed Hospital Plumbing, Piping, and Medical Gas System additions, remodels, upgrades and retrofits in virtually every department as a Design-Builder, General Contractor and Subcontractor. Troy works for Stirrett-Johnsen, Inc., a Mechanical Contractor enthusiastically assisting Geoff Glass and his green operation efforts at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA.
