Sarah O’Brien has been developing, analyzing and negotiating public policies on a variety of environmental health-related issues since 1989. She was an Environmental Health Advocate for the Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG) for six years, and was instrumental in gaining passage of Vermont’s groundbreaking 1998 mercury product labeling law, and the state’s “Healthy Schools” law, which encourages Vermont schools to eliminate their use of toxic products. Later, as Northeast Coordinator of the National Wildlife Federation’s Clean the Rain Campaign, she promoted passage of mercury product legislation throughout New England and carried out a public education campaign on the dangers of mercury pollution and the need for strong mercury reduction measures. Prior to coming to H2E, Sarah worked with INFORM, a national nonprofit, to assist states, municipalities and other large institutions to develop environmentally preferable purchasing strategies and specifications. Sarah tends chickens and gardens from her home in rural Vermont, which she shares with her two daughters Willa (13) and Clare (9) and her husband Randall, a musician and teacher.
